Appliquéd quilt.  Judged; Theme.  60 x 60”.  Machine pieced, hand appliquéd/quilted, 2004.  Design source: Original design.  Owner’s Description: Each paper-cut (Scherenschnitte), designed with the theme of communities and activities of the Houston Bay Area, is reminiscent of classic paper-cut patterns found on many Baltimore Album quilts of the mid-1800s.  The center inked block is the skyline of downtown Houston.  The design of this quilt demonstrates the unity of the diversified communities of the Clear Lake area and the influence of our metropolitan city.

Wearable Art.  Judged.  Machine pieced/quilted, 2003.  Pattern source: adapted from Lorraine Torrance’s “Japanese Jewels;” flowers are from Kumiko Sudo’s book.  Owner’s Description: The flowers trailing from the shoulder are on a gold vine and stitched with metallic veins. There is a free-motion stitched scene stitched with a coral thread on the lower half. On the right side I have a trapunto stitched geisha highlighted with free-motion stitching. I placed origami twisted squares on the shoulder between the golden strips. The back is a Michael Miller panel with trapunto. The lining has also been satin stitched.

Pieced quilt.  Judged.  72 x 96”.  Hand pieced/quilted, 2003.  Owner’s Description: One of the first quilts I learned about was a charm quilt.  Without having any fabric in a stash, I set this as my goal.  I stopped just short of the traditional 1,000 pieces as it was getting too large.  With hindsight, I learned that I had cut my triangle pattern too large.  So much for beginners.

Pieced quilt.  Judged.  84 x 102”.  Machine pieced/quilted, 2003.  Makers: Margaret McPhail, Carol Wiggs.  Machine quilter: Denise Green.  Pattern: Jacob’s Ladder and 9-Patch.  Owner’s Description: The fabric for this quilt was donated by the members of St. Christopher Episcopal Church to raise money for the 2003 Youth Mission trip to San Francisco.  The Jacob's Ladder blocks were set to highlight the country church and its desire to reach out into the community, and across the country.  The continuation of the pattern into the borders simply states that outreach was not limited to the 2003 trip.

I originally intended it to go on the couch as a Christmas quilt, but now I think it will lay on my daughter's bed. I machine-pieced and hand-quilted this project. I hand-quilted holly leaves and berries in the border.  The center motif is hand-quilted holly berries.

Cutting most down again, I came up with this huge color wheel design. I gave the middle a personal touch.  The fabric on the back is a memorial of the September 11th print.

Owner’s Description: My husband admired this typically Amish pattern during trips to my home state of Pennsylvania.  I made this for him in fall colors because he takes an annual trip there every fall during deer season.  During a visit, I collected leaves during a hike along the Allegheny River and made quilting stencils from sassafras, beech, and sweet gum leaves. This quilt won third in the 2002 Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo for piecing.

It is quilted trapunto style with 2 layers of batting. The bottom layer is Hobbs 80/20, with a layer of poly on top of that. Heavily quilting the motifs helps them appear to be trapunto.

We were given the background fabric and had to come up with a theme. We moved from machine to machine and had a short period of time to quilt something on each other's quilts. Talk about stressing our brains and creativity!!  But it was fun.

Original design.  Owner’s Description: The miniature quilts featured within the quilt were designed in Electric Quilt and printed to pre-treated fabric sheets designed to be printed with an inkjet printer. The quilting over the miniature quilts was created with a design created in Electric Quilt which was then transferred to Brother's PE Design software and stitched out with a Brother ULT 2001N embroidery machine. The remaining quilting was machine stitched on a sewing machine.

316B  Elaine Haycraft – Haycraft Reunion

Mixed Technique quilt. Judged. 44 x 60”. Machine pieced, hand appliquéd/quilted, 1995. Pattern:  Bowtie and Snowball.  Owner’s Description: The quilt top, minus borders, was brought to a family reunion in Owensboro, KY. Everyone present signed the quilt and explained how he/she was related to the Haycraft Clan. My husband's aunt, 94 and matriarch of the clan, signed the top snowball.  Two of the youngest children, ages 7 and 5, signed in the lower left area, adding much charm to the quilt.

319  Margaret Horton – Victorian Ladies Crazy Quilt

Mixed Technique quilt.  Judged.  64 x 60”.  Machine pieced/quilted, hand appliquéd, 2003.  Design source:  Crazy quilting of Ellie Sienkiewicz and Judith Montano.  Owner’s Description:  This quilt is heavily embellished with beads, charms, flowers, and other similar trinkets and must be handled with extreme care.  Contrary to most crazy quilts, this one was lined with batting and quilting done to the back by machine and then the top was hand quilted and tied with yarn to hold it all together.

321A  Marsha Fuller – Perennial Patchwork

Mixed Technique quilt.  Judged.  20 x 17”.  Machine pieced, hand appliquéd/quilted, 2002.  Design source:  Perennial Patchwork pattern by Renee Plains.  Owner’s Description: This little quilt pattern was in American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine and caught my eye.  The 2 triangular striped pieces at the bottom corners were not in the design.  They are a result of a cutting mistake I made.  Thankfully, I was able to correct the mistake by adding these pieces, and it looks great because the fabric was striped.  This hangs at our back door, so we look at it every time we exit the house.

 

321B  Jerrianne Evans – Lady Liberty

325  Beth Porter Johnson – Gepetto’s Friends

Blocks made by Beth Johnson, Carolyn Allison, Jean Cloyd, Kris Bryson, Patty Mayer, and Sandy Thompson.  Original designs.  Owner’s Description: This quilt, from a "round robin" block exchange, started with the middle puppet block in the right column.  The block was passed to a quilter who, after adding a puppet block or two, passed all the blocks on to the second participant.  What fun it was to receive the blocks back and to discover all these wonderful creations!  I pieced the blocks together, adding the hand-painted mannequins in the border for visual interest.

The eagle is adapted from an early 19th century quilt that was pictured on one of the Smithsonian websites. Mom matched thread and embroidered the squares in a year. Mom, my children's Nana, will be 80 this summer and has embroidered beautiful items for me since I was five.  Knowing little about quilting, I relied on my friend, Sandy Kimbrell, to guide me in colors.  What an excellent choice!  Sandy also pieced the top.  We saw JoLynn's work and knew she would be the perfect quilter for our garden theme.

We bought the pattern that day, but I never would have gotten this done without the Friendship Bee, who made 2 sets of blocks for me.  I also took it to Melody Crust's quilting-design workshop last winter, and she came up with the basics of the quilting design. It's an imperfect quilt but I love it!

Pieced quilt – 3+ Persons.  Judged.  72 x 80”.  Machine pieced/quilted, 2004.  Machine quilter: Denise Green.  Owner’s Description: The Tin Man Blocks and 9-patch blocks were bought in different lots at the Lakeview Quilters Guild auction last year.  My friend, Denise Green, gave me some orphan triple 4-patch blocks she had left from a block exchange.  While looking at these different blocks it occurred to me that with a little alteration they might all work together.  I think they are happy together and I gave some orphans a home.

 

342  Margaret McPhail – BTSR 2003

Pieced quilt.  Judged; Theme.  72 x 54”.  Machine pieced/quilted, 2004.  Machine quilter: Denise Green.  Owner’s Description: The inspiration for this quilt came from Troop 464's 2003 Summer camp trip to Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch, located in the West Texas Davis Mountains.  The main pattern is a Rail Fence with 3 breaks in the pattern to represent the many gates in the fences at BTSR.  The Delectable Mountain border blocks reflect light blue for the clear daytime skies, and dark blue with silver starts in remembrance of the clear, star-filled nighttime skies.  The quilting is like icing on the cake, with sprinkles!  The quilting lines of the horse's head commemorate the adventure of the cavalcade riders.

I thought the design would be wonderful in appliqué, and that it would be a fun decoration for his room. The dragon scales are quilted in variegated metallic thread.

Mixed Technique quilt.  Judged.  34 x 39”.  Machine pieced/quilted, hand appliquéd/quilted, 2004.  Owner’s Description: The mask face and the background are fabrics that I discharge dyed; the head covering is African fabric. The pieced blocks are mainly African fabrics, with a few Australian fabrics.  The border is USA-designed fabric.  I made this quilt to experiment with old and new techniques, and have fun.  I had more fun that I ever imagined!

I kept in mind she is Patawatomi Indian and loves animals. But of course her cat, in the middle, is the real star.

Pieced quilt.  Judged.  76 x 76”.  Machine pieced/quilted, 2004.  Machine quilter: Karen Watts.  Original design.  Owner’s Description:  Studying pictures of the early Mennonite and Amish quilts, I designed my Postage Stamp Star with that in mind.  The eight-pointed star quilt was a fun challenge for me, with over 1600 one-inch squares, or postage stamps, in the star.  The fabrics used are cotton except for the wool batting.  My nickname for this quilt is PS (postage stamps).

600D  Sharon Meyer – Let Me Play Among the Stars

Mixed Technique quilt.  Judged.  90 x 94”.  Machine pieced, machine appliqué, machine quilted, 2002.  Machine quilter: Denise Saundra Neeley.  Pattern source: Judy Niemeyer – Twisted Star pattern.  Owner’s Description: As usual, this Judy Niemeyer pattern is as complex as the rest of her patterns.  It is constructed with blocks that are triangle-shaped and was actually easier to put together than I thought it would be.  I like to include as many fabrics as possible in my quilts to help keep the viewers' eyes moving.  While I was working on the border I realized I had not named the quilt yet and decided that since it was a piano key border, "Let me play among the stars " was as good as it would get.
